A well-maintained bike is safer, more enjoyable to ride and lasts significantly longer. The good news: most routine maintenance tasks are straightforward to learn and require very few tools.
1. Chain Cleaning: The Most Important Maintenance Task
The chain is the component that deteriorates fastest when neglected. A dirty, dry chain rapidly wears cassettes and chainrings — replacing a full groupset costs far more than a little regular attention.
Frequency: Every 200-300km in normal conditions, every 80-100km in wet or muddy conditions
Process:
- Degrease with a chain-specific degreaser (not petrol or harsh solvents)
- Rinse and dry thoroughly
- Lubricate with appropriate chain oil (wet lube for rain, dry lube for dry conditions)
- Remove excess lubricant with a clean cloth
2. Tyre Pressure: Check Before Every Ride
Riding with underinflated tyres increases puncture risk, reduces efficiency and can damage rims. For gravel, ideal pressure varies based on rider weight and terrain type.
Quick guide:
- Tarmac: 55-75 psi (38-42mm tyres)
- Mixed surface: 35-50 psi
- Technical off-road: 25-35 psi
3. Hydraulic Disc Brakes: Checking and Bleeding
Hydraulic brakes are robust but need periodic attention. Signs it's time to act:
- Lever travelling too close to the bar (air in the system)
- Constant rubbing noise (worn pads or dirty rotor)
- Reduced braking power
Bleeding hydraulic brakes requires a specific kit and some practice — if unsure, take the bike to a workshop.
4. Drivetrain: Basic Adjustment
A well-adjusted derailleur shifts precisely and quietly. If you hear chain noise or shifting is imprecise, try turning the cable barrel adjuster (usually half a turn is enough).
If the problem persists or the derailleur is bent after a crash, don't force it — a bent derailleur can tear the frame's derailleur hanger.
5. Seasonal Service: What to Have Checked
At the start of each season (or every 2,000-3,000km), take your bike for a full service. Key items:
- Chain wear check with a wear indicator tool
- Headset and bottom bracket bearing inspection
- Spoke tension check
- Cable and housing lubrication
